Light Detection and Ranging – a device that combines a camera sensor and infrared (eye-safe) laser emitter to create a 3D map of the local environment.
Famously shunned by Tesla, the LiDAR sensor is otherwise universally adopted for autonomous vehicle research and development efforts, although it remains to be seen as to whether it will be found on large scale vehicle deployments due to high cost and low performance compared with other sensor types.
