Radiowave detection and ranging devices send pulses of harmless microwave radiation in a wide spread and detect pulses which have bounced off hard objects.
A reliable longer-range detection device, particularly in poor weather, it remains expensive per unit and continues to have a fairly low resolution compared with other sensors so may miss small objects.
